Nowhere in the world is the humble coconut given so much celebration than in the Philippines. In fact, from north to south, coconut-themed fiestas happen just about anywhere. And in Misamis Oriental they call it Kuyamis Festival.
It’s probably not a coincidence if the words “Misamis” & “kuyamis” rhyme. Many believe that Misamis got its name from this golden-coloured coconut called kuyamis, once abundant along the coasts of northern Mindanao.
Kuyamis Festival: Let’s Go Coco-Loco!
Staged every 2nd week of January in Cagayan de Oro City, Kuyamis opens the long list colorful festivals in Region 10. And if you don’t know it, this side of the country is home to some of the country’s fantastic merrymakings!
Kuyamis Festival’s takes its reason for celebration from the coconut its indigenous people sustained with in the olden times. Fast-forward to this day, Misamis Oriental’s coconut industry still drives the province’s export earnings.
So, it’s just but fitting to rejoice it! As such, Kuyamis Festival today carries a whole new meaning of revelry — a thanksgiving of bounty, a cultural fete & just everything adorable about being Misamisnon.

The Province of Misamis Oriental fills its 1st half of January with 2 weeks of back-to-back activities. Various fringe events like dance competitions & horse shows usher the festivity. Then there’s the indigenous people’s skills contests as well as nightly cultural presentations.
Of course, the annual search for Miss Kuyamis is another crowd-drawing event where its beauty queens win in national pageants. Moreover, concerts, art exhibits & parties happen all around the city too.
For one thing, Kuyamis Bazaar is another exciting activity to explore during this season. Here, each municipality sets up a booth showcasing the best of their town. Everything is on sale, from food to agri-products & from tourist attractions to handicrafts!
Albeit new, the street dancing competition is one of the anticipated events in Kuyamis Festival. Be in for surprises as participating towns dazzle you with their awesome presentations.
Although Kuyamis Festival is still on its 7th year, it is already making scenes in the festival circuit of northern Mindanao. All together, truly, it is another festival every traveler needs to put in his fiesta bucketlist.
