Princesa Michaella’s Guesthouse is one of the adored backpacker places in Port Barton, Palawan. It is pretty and bright, spotless and quiet. Above all, it is great value for money. No wonder why Michaella’s is hailed as the darling of Port Barton.
I arrived in Port Barton without prior hostel booking because I wanted to see for myself what the guesthouses in this tiny cove has to offer. I had a short list of affordable must-stay places and Michaella’s, although it’s not beachfront was just one good find.
Michaella’s is just a quick run to the beach. It is about 100 meters away from the main swimming area and just around the 2nd block from the center of the village. The guesthouse is also within the jeepney’s route, which makes it an ideal location especially if you’re carrying a huge luggage.
At a glance, Michaella’s doesn’t look like it’s built for backpackers. A garden full of blooming flowers and trees frame the entire dainty guesthouse. It has hammocks under the shade of coconut trees and gazebos for you to laze around. There is an open kitchen if you wish to prepare your own food. And there’s WIFI in the common areas (yes, WIFI).
The beds at Michealla’s start at P300 (about $2.50) for the well-spaced dorm rooms that fit about 4 guests inside. Private rooms come in standard, double and quadruple occupancies, with its own toilet & bath inside. These start at P600 to P800 ($11-$20). All accommodation types are non-airconditioned but are provided with ceilings fans & mosquito nets. For its price, style & comfort, this place is already a good deal.
But what really makes Michaella’s adorable is its host, Lucy Guzman. She is a very refined but cheerful lady who treats her guests like family. Most of the time you’ll see her working in the garden and singing to her flowers. She loves to chitchat with her guests and sometimes, she’ll invite you over for a cup of coffee or a simple meal in the kitchen. Her son, Bong, who is equally amiable, helps her run the place. Bong, like his mom is a musician and knows where the party places are in Port Barton.
Michaella’s is neither listed in any online hotel booking nor they have a website for you to check. But you may directly call Tita Lucy (as I fondly call her) at +63 948 2361099. Or you may just come and she’ll make a bed available for you.
