A trip around Ilocos Norte assures you of fantastic beaches, good food, interesting crafts & lots of historical sites. And when you decide to go on this northbound journey, you might as well choose a resort brimming with heritage drama.
Tucked in the town of Currimao, in between the garlic-rich town of Pinili & the sand dunes of Paoay, Sitio Remedios stands in colonial elegance. Sophisticated travellers adore it as one of the most outstanding gallery-designed resorts in Ilocos Norte.
Sitio Remedios: Seek Your Own Poetry
Loveliness begins as soon you enter the resort. Called Avenida de Azucao, its lily-filled ponds & lines of cadena de amor instantly take you on a dainty prelude to nostalgia. In fact, along the way, it’s easy to spot corners seemingly locked in time.
This short walk ends on a flight of stairs that leads to Plaza San Miguel. Straightaway, this landing punctuated by the image of the archangel whisks the charm. Beside it is a chapel supported by massive buttresses reminiscent of San Agustin Church in Paoay.
Capilla San Miguel lies at the heart of Sitio Remedios. Albeit small, its façade expressed in muted Baroque lines exudes the illusion of grandness. On the inside, hardcarved santos stand striking against patchy concrete walls suggesting a non finito aesthetic.
Notably, Sitio Remedios is a re-creation of the opulence of old-world Ilocos. Outlined in a quadricula, the resort is recollective of a Spanish colonial town. In the middle is a courtyard mimicking a plaza where turn-of-the-century homes surround it.
Ilocandia Townscape
Most guesthouses in Sitio Remedios are original homes from various parts of Ilocos Norte, reassembled plank-by-plank in its new beachside location. Stunningly, some were rebuilt from salvaged pieces of wood, stained glass, wrought iron ventanillas & calado transoms.
Using contemporary engineering methods, every piece is respectfully put together & restored into a heritage boutique resort honouring its historic heritage.
Each home carries the name of the town where it originally stood. There’s one from Batac, Piddig, Dingras, Bacarra & Pasiquin. However, some houses take the name of its design inspirations like ladrillo for the brick-laden suite. Then there is Balay Puraw or the White House.
Inside, bentwood furniture, balayong kapiya seaters, ochovado tables, comoda cabinets & hand-carved santos adorn every room. Moreover, handwoven abel sheets & ocean breezed linens wrap its beds & soft pillows.
Expressly, everywhere around Sitio Remedios are pieces from the past. Here are excesses of almario racks & balayong tables. Likewise, butaka chairs provide perfect spots for lazing down with a beach view in the horizon.
The Ilocano Charm
Since this heritage resort swung open its doors in the mid-2000s, it has already dazzled many holidaymakers. While its gorgeous suites first bring the awe, the splendour of traditions, breezy ambience & hospitality are actually what make the guests stay.
Truly, at Sitio Remedios, they take pride not only of its architectural aesthetics but also their charming but attentive service. Particularly, it expresses the grace of old-world living, Ilocano style.
Celebrate seclusion without solitude at Sitio Remedios. Be seduced by the allures of bygone times without missing out on luxe fantasies. Come, find your piece of poetry.
